On 07 March 2014 at 1642 UTC, a Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, bound for Beijing departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport with 239 persons on board. It was a Boeing 777-200ER. A half hour in the flight all communication stopped suddenly and the plane changed course to the remote South Indian Ocean. Nothing was heard or seen of the plane until on 1 August 2015 a piece of the wing was found on the Beach of Reunion Island in the Southwest Indian Ocean. The accident is very similar to the crash of Helios Flight 5223 on 13 August 2005. This plane suffered from a sudden leak in the cabin pressure, crew and passengers suffered from hypoxia, three hours later the plane hit a mountain near Athens, Greece. Did Captain Shah of MH370 try to avoid crashing on Beijing? What is the role of the huge American base of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean in the story?

Diamond has a unique combination of properties, such as the highest hardness and thermal conductivity among any known material, high electrical resistivity, a large optical band gap and a high transmission, good resistance to chemical erosion, low adhesion and friction, and extremely low thermal expansion coefficient. As such, diamond has been a desirable material in a wide range of applications in mechanical, chemical, optical, thermal and electrical engineering. In many of the cases, the surface of a diamond component or element must have a superior finish, often down to a surface roughness of nanometers. Nevertheless, due to its extreme hardness and chemical inertness, the polishing of diamond and its composites has been a sophisticated process. Polishing of Diamond Materials will provide a state-of-the-art analysis, both theoretically and experimentally, of the most commonly used polishing techniques for mono/poly-crystalline diamond and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) diamond films, including mechanical, chemo-mechanical, thermo-chemical, high energy beam, dynamic friction and other polishing techniques. The in-depth discussions will be on the polishing mechanisms, possible modelling, material removal rate and the quality control of these techniques. A comparison of their advantages and drawbacks will be carried out to provide the reader with a useful guideline for the selection and implementation of these polishing techniques. Polishing of Diamond Materials will be of interest to researchers and engineers in hard materials and precision manufacturing, industry diamond suppliers, diamond jewellery suppliers and postgraduate students in the area of precision manufacturing.

This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 16 papers concerning a variety of timely issues in pavement mechanics. Topics include the characterization, modeling, and simulation of asphalt mixtures, asphalt pavements, and concrete mixtures. Eight of these papers were submitted for publication only, while the other eight were presented at the Symposium on Pavement Mechanics and Materials at the 18th ASCE Engineering Mechanics Division Conference held June 3 6, 2007 in Blacksburg, Virginia. Topics discussed include: modeling and simulations of asphalt concrete; interactions between aggregates, mastics, and voids; use of finite-element-method (FEM) and discrete-element-method (DEM); continuum approaches including nonlinear viscoelastic analysis and temperature dependency; pavement stress and strain analysis; laboratory characterization of modified asphalt concrete; pavement fatigue analysis; tire-pavement interactio;, and coefficient of thermal expansion on concrete for rigid pavement design. Pavements and Materials: Characterization, Modeling, and Simulation will be valuable to geotechnical engineers, pavement engineers, and all those involved in the field of pavement mechanics.

Specifically designed as an introduction to the exciting world of engineering, ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS: AN INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING encourages students to become engineers and prepares them with a solid foundation in the fundamental principles and physical laws. The book begins with a discovery of what engineers do as well as an inside look into the various areas of specialization. An explanation on good study habits and what it takes to succeed is included as well as an introduction to design and problem solving, communication, and ethics. Once this foundation is established, the book moves on to the basic physical concepts and laws that students will encounter regularly. The framework of this text teaches students that engineers apply physical and chemical laws and principles as well as mathematics to design, test, and supervise the production of millions of parts, products, and services that people use every day. By gaining problem solving skills and an understanding of fundamental principles, students are on their way to becoming analytical, detail-oriented, and creative engineers.
