A Cognitive and Communicative Approach

The imperative mood as a whole has generally been neglected by Greek grammarians. The Greek Imperative Mood in the New Testament: A Cognitive and Communicative Approach utilizes insights from modern linguistics and communication theory in order to propose an inherent (semantic) meaning for the mood and describe the way in which it is used in the New Testament (pragmatics). A linguistic theory called neuro-cognitive stratificational linguistics is used to help isolate the morphological imperative mood and focus on addressing issues directly related to this area, while principles from a communication theory called relevance theory provide a theoretical basis for describing the usages of the mood. This book also includes a survey of New Testament and select linguistic approaches to the imperative mood and proposes that the imperative mood is volitional-directive and should be classified in a multidimensional manner. Each imperative should be classified according to force, which participant (speaker or hearer) benefits from the fulfillment of the imperative, and where the imperative falls within the event sequence of the action described in the utterance. In this context, sociological factors such as the rank of participants and level of politeness are discussed together with other pragmatic-related information. The Greek Imperative Mood in the New Testament is a valuable teaching tool for intermediate and advanced Greek classes.

The study of Greek among the English-speaking peoples has lately received new impetus, owing to the interest taken in everything Greek by the descendants, relatives or friends of the Greek settlers on the North American continent. Modern Greek—an evolutionary form of ancient Greek—is much simpler than classical Greek. In fact, it can be acquired as easily as the most popular European languages of today. However, for lack of the proper means of instruction, its study has been greatly handicapped both in schools and homes. This book is intended to fill a long existing need for a simple, methodical and attractive medium of instruction, enabling the student of average education and intelligence to master the elements of Modern Greek grammar and at the same time to acquire a working knowledge of everyday Greek. Our method of instruction is the same as that used in all our English and Greek instruction books—a system of gradual progress from the simpler and more useful elements of speech and grammar to the essential grammatical rules and expressions required for advanced study. This book contains classic material dating back to the 1900s and before. The content has been carefully selected for its interest and relevance to a modern audience.

The "Greek-German Dictionary of Writings from the New Testament and Early Christian Literature" is one of the standard works for New Testament scholars, researchers in patristics, and classical philologists. The 6th edition has been completely revised in all respects - in the NT text-base (both with respect to its comprehensiveness and the provision of variants) and in the Apostolic Fathers and the New Testament Apocrypha (these have been incorporated as comprehensively as possible for the first time). In addition, the Apologists and Early Church Fathers have been cited far more frequently than was previously the case. Numerous authors from the Christian, intertestamentary and classical fields have been referenced for the first time. Over 250 new articles have been included. The new typography speeds up searching and makes the structure of the articles more transparent. Thus, it waspossible to expand the material by about a third without increasing the number of pages.
