This book gives a concise introduction into Jewish Law as a whole and its development within the different denominations of Judaism. It offers an overview of betrothal, engagement and marriage, gives details of the wedding ceremony, marriage restrictions and marital contracts as well as rules for divorce and re-marriage. Since the State of Israel does not have provisions for civil marriage Jewish family law is still relevant as basis for marriages and divorces among Jewish citizens. This book is especially targeted towards congregational rabbis and those officiating in rabbinical courts, experts of canon and church law, and legal practitioners in the field of international and comparative family law. Theologians and Judaic scholars will also find value in this book.

English summary: Narrative tradition omits many aspects of the history of a province. Over the course of recent decades, a range of epigraphic, papyrological, numismatic and archaeological source material has been reassessed with regard to the province of Judea which provides a much more up to date and realistic impression of the province of Judea / Syria Palestine than that which had developed previously, in particular through the influence of the statements in the Mishnah and the Talmud. This collection of essays by Werner Eck reveals new perspectives on Roman rule in Judea gained from inscriptions, especially in Latin and Greek, and shows the disastrous consequences that the Bar Kochba revolt had for the country. At the same time it puts forward a skeptical view of Josephus, whose depiction of the Roman prefect before the first uprising is exposed as a deliberate defamation.

The contributions to this volume are concerned with the Roman law of antiquity in its broadest sense, covering both private and public law from the Roman Republic to the Byzantine era, including legal papyrology. They also examine the reception of Roman law in Western Europe and its colonies (specifically the Dutch East Indies) from the Middle Ages to the promulgation of the German Burgerliche Gesetzbuch in 1900. They reflect the wide interests of Professor Boudewijn Sirks, whom the volume honours on the occasion of his retirement and whose work and career have transcended frontiers and nations.

This book is an important contribution to the current lively debate about the relationship between law and society in the Roman world. This debate, which was initiated by the work of John Crook in the 1960's, has had a profound impact upon the study of law and history and has created sharply divided opinions on the extent to which law may be said to be a product of the society that created it. This work is a modest attempt to provide a balanced assessment of the various points of view. The chapters within this book have been specifically arranged to represent the debate. It contains an introductory chapter by Alan Watson, whose views on the relationship between law and society have caused some controversy. In the remaining chapters a distinguished international group of scholars address this debate by focusing on studies of law and empire, codes and codification, death and economics, commerce and procedure. This book does not purport to provide a complete survey of Roman private law in light of Roma

Daughters of Hecate unites for the first time research on the problem of gender and magic in three ancient Mediterranean societies: early Judaism, Christianity, and Graeco-Roman culture. The book illuminates the gendering of ancient magic by approaching the topic from three distinct disciplinary perspectives: literary stereotyping, the social application of magic discourse, and material culture. The authors probe the foundations of, processes, and motivations behind gendered stereotypes, beginning with Western culture's earliest associations of women and magic in the Bible and Homer's Odyssey. Daughters of Hecate provides a nuanced exploration of the topic while avoiding reductive approaches. In fact, the essays in this volume uncover complexities and counter-discourses that challenge, rather than reaffirm, many gendered stereotypes taken for granted and reified by most modern scholarship. By combining critical theoretical methods with research into literary and material evidence, Daughters of Hecate interrogates a false association that has persisted from antiquity, to early modern witch hunts, to the present day.

English summary: The tractate Ketubbot, the second tractate in the order of Nashim (Women), deals with the laws relating to marriage discussing and defining the mutual duties and privileges of both spouses and the minimal amount of the marriage contract to which the wife is entitled in the case of her husband's death or in the case of divorce. Other topics bear on questions of the penalty in the absence of her virginity and adultery, and compensation and fines relating to the violation or seduction of certain classes of women. Discussions on the disposal of money, goods, slaves or property inherited by a widow are also part of this tractate. The final sections of the tractate deal with the last moments of the life and the burial of Rabbi Yehuda ha-Nasi, and with the duty of a wife to obey her husband's wish to move to the land of Israel and Jerusalem, a theme which demonstrates the superiority of Palestine and Jerusalem over all other lands and towns.
