As an ordained Deacon of 22 years, it truly amazes me how Deacon Bernard Swift can put into writing all the concepts and truths that he shares to help others live a healthy and intimate relationship and spirituality with our God. It compels me to delve deeper into the very depth of my inner self. —Deacon Fred Von Voight Deacon Bernie Swift’s recent spiritual book, Will Thinking It Is Make it So?, is a must read for the Christian soul. It is a brilliant and simplistic explanation of how thought plays a powerful role in one’s relationship, or lack there of, with our Creator. —Tom Keysor, a Lord’s daily Altar Server, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, International Pilgrimage Tour Host, and humble believer in the true faith - Catholicism

Never look at how far you have to go and let it discourage you. Always look at how far you have come and be encouraged to stay persistent and patient until you reach your goal. The Life and Teaching of Naropa

Author: Chogyam Trungpa

ISBN: 0834821362

In what he calls a "200 percent potent" teaching, Chögyam Trungpa reveals how the spiritual path is a raw and rugged "unlearning" process that draws us away from the comfort of conventional expectations and conceptual attitudes toward a naked encounter with reality. The tantric paradigm for this process is the story of the Indian master Naropa (1016–1100), who is among the enlightened teachers of the Kagyu lineage of the Tibetan Buddhism. Naropa was the leading scholar at Nalanda, the Buddhist monastic university, when he embarked upon the lonely and arduous path to enlightenment. After a series of daunting trials, he was prepared to receive the direct transmission of the awakened state of mind from his guru, Tilopa. Teachings that he received, including those known as the six doctrines of Naropa, have been passed down in the lineages of Tibetan Buddhism for a millennium. Trungpa's commentary shows the relevance of Naropa's extraordinary journey for today's practitioners who seek to follow the spiritual path. Naropa's story makes it possible to delineate in very concrete terms the various levels of spiritual development that lead to the student's readiness to meet the teacher's mind. Trungpa thus opens to Western students of Buddhism the path of devotion and surrender to the guru as the embodiment and representative of reality.

There needs to be a fundamental review of the law governing undercover police operations, including the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000. The Committee recommends the publication of a consultation paper before the next election, with a view to publishing draft legislation at the beginning of the next Parliament. The Committee finds that there is an unsatisfactory degree of ambiguity in the current legal framework governing undercover operations and that the current legislation "fails adequately to safeguard the fundamental rights of the individuals affected". The use of the identities of dead children to create cover identities for undercover officers could potentially have put bereaved families at risk. There should be a full and unambiguous apology from the forces concerned to the families and the practice should never be followed in future. Operation Herne, which is investigating these allegations, has already cost £1.2million and has not yet made any arrests. It should be brought to a conclusion as swiftly as possible, so that families and victims involved can achieve closure

This discipline has become more reflective in recent years. It has also become blatantly philosophical, which is itself cause for reflection. The philosophy of psychology has not been exactly a burgeoning field, and yet psychologists and philosophers of all persuasions are writing philosophical psychology. Perhaps all this activity merely reflects the uneasy bifurcation of psychology into biological and cognitive domains. After all, there were similar flurries in the 1920s and 1950s when the discipline assumed new directions. But, before, there were too many things to do; scientific knowing seemed so compelling and so singular in methodology. Today, the entire enterprise is much more uncertain, and not just psychology, but all human scientific inquiry. The fun damental questions remain much the same, of course; what has changed is that philosophers are explicitly addressing questions of psy chology and psychologists are at least implicitly engaged in philosophy. The bounderies are no longer clear cut! Theoretical psychology is as much the doing of philosophy as it is of experimental research. Volume 4 of these Annals attests to this state of affairs. The psychologists' style reflects their philosophical understanding; the philosophers differ according to what they take to be psychological knowledge.

This report examines existing approaches to formula funding across government, and the principles that should be carried forward to new arrangements. Government departments distributed £152 billion, one-fifth of all government spending, to local public bodies in 2011-12 based on the three grants considered: Primary Care Trust Allocations; Dedicated Schools Grant; and the Department for Communities and Local Government's Formula Grant. These distribute funding to local public bodies in a range of sectors, including health, education, local government, police and fire and rescue services. The formula funding systems are complex, difficult to understand, and have led to inequitable allocations. For Dedicated Schools Grant, based mainly on historical spending patterns, per pupil funding for schools with similar characteristics can vary by as much as 40%. Under Formula Grant, nearly 20% of authorities received allocations which are more than 10% different from calculated needs. The priorities accorded to different elements of the formulae are judgements which have a direct impact on the distribution of funds. In some cases the basis for the judgement is guided by authoritative, published independent advice. In other cases, the basis for judgement lacks transparency, and external advice lacks status and influence. Only 4% of respondents to DCLG's consultation supported the current version of the model used to calculate Formula Grant. Some of the data used by departments in calculating relative needs is inaccurate and out of date. Current reviews of formula funding provide opportunities to address the weaknesses identified in this report.

Love in Law and Law in Love

The aim of this book is to explore what it means to live a life under the law. Does a life of law preclude love and does a life of love preclude law? Part of the theme of the book is that social questions also raise individual moral and ethical questions; that to live lawfully implies both a question of how I should live in my relations with my fellows and how society should be organised. These questions must be looked at together. The book explores these questions and in looking at the articulation of law and love touches upon debates in personal morality, aesthetics, epistemology, social and political organisation, institutional design and the form and substance of law. It raises questions that are of interest to students and those working in law, theology, and social and political theory.

When Laura Munson's essay was first published, the New York Times was so flooded with responses that they had to close down the comment feature on their website. Readers sent it to their friends and therapists gave it to their clients. What did Munson write that caused such a fervour? Laura detailed what happened when her husband of more than twenty years told her he wasn't sure he loved her anymore and wanted to move out. Laura's response to her husband: I don't buy it. In this poignant and funny memoir, Laura recounts the time her faith in her marriage was put to the test. Shaken to the core after the death of her beloved father, not finding the professional success that she had hoped for, and after much therapy, Laura, aged forty, realised she had to stop basing her happiness on things outside her control and commit to an 'End of Suffering'.
